Walter Cuthbert Blythe was the third child (second son) of Gilbert and Anne Blythe (née Shirley) in L. M. Montgomery's Anne series. A sensitive poet at heart, he had a very active imagination, like his mother, and would avoid fights and "ugliness" as much as possible, unless it came to defending his mother, at least.
In Rilla of Ingleside, he fought after much reluctance during World War I, and in the trenches he wrote the war poem "The Piper", which became a success after it was published. He died in combat. Other poems he wrote during the war are read in The Blythes Are Quoted.
