The book is unique in the Bond series as it is told entirely from her first-person perspective, with James Bond himself not appearing until the final third of the story.
A French-Canadian woman with a history of emotionally damaging relationships with men, such experiences lead her to take a job as a caretaker at a remote motel in the Adirondack Mountains. While at the motel, she becomes entangled in a plot with two mobsters and is ultimately rescued by James Bond, who arrives by chance.
