thecookieprincessIn 1774, in what is now Montana, Indian woman Bright River finds a dying white woman who was fleeing an unknown danger. The woman asks her to take care of her newborn daughter, who is named White Owl because of her pale skin and penetrating eyes. White Owl grows up in the Blackfoot tribe, raised as one of their own, but is not allowed to marry or have children because of the prohibition on whites. One day, while walking in the forest, the girl is attacked by a wolf but is rescued by Grey Falcon, a scout for the tribe. Their meeting begins a forbidden but powerful love that remains a secret from the tribe. Despite their affection, White Owl and Grey Falcon know that their relationship cannot exist in accordance with the traditions of the tribe. In the end, Grey Falcon decides to leave the village so as not to put her in suffering. White Owl, however, is unable to stand without him. At night, he leaves the Indian settlement and goes in search of Grey Falcon, but gets lost in the forest. The next morning she decides to go to the highest mountain and end her life, but is found by the colonisers. Although they cannot marvel at the sight of a white girl in Indian clothes, they decide to take her in and teach her their customs, eventually naming her Grace. She is eventually married off to an English man, a 34-year-old widower who treats her like a freak and a temporary distraction because of her Indian behaviour. He then treats her as property whose purpose is to serve him and look after his children - a 14-year-old son and two daughters aged 9 and 10. When she tries to free herself from her husband, he shows her no mercy-Beats her and leaves her in the forest. Weeping and slowly losing consciousness, White Owl is found by an Indian man who has been wandering in the forest for several weeks - this is Grey Falcon. Although he does everything he can to keep her alive, her injuries are so severe that only a shaman can really save her. Having no choice, he takes the girl on his back and begins a search for their village. Thanks to his memory, he finds their camp and leads them to a shaman who, thanks to herbs and ‘magic’, saves the woman. The chief is so moved by the whole story that he reverses the ban imposed earlier - he allows White Owl to marry Grey Falcon.
