When Hal was employed as a mechanic, Uatu the Guardian selected him to join the Starbrand Corps. After receiving the Star Brand, Hal became Starbrand and used his skills to fight crime all around the galaxy. After being accused of murdering Sinestro, Hal lost his powers. Uatu, who had a mental breakdown, had set him up. In order to kill all members of the Starbrand Corps, Uatu required Hal to be killed too. Before Hal could be killed, Speed Demon stopped Uatu from doing so, but after learning that Hal had committed crimes, Speed Demon killed Hal. Star Brand was reborn as Starwave when the hellfire of Speed Demon and the energy of the Star Brand fused together to produce a matter-energy flux.
