Evil geneticists who were conducting experiments on Rosa Callasantos were responsible for unleashing her hidden metamutant powers. With increased senses, superhuman strength, retractable claws, and fur, she was changed into a werecat. Rosa managed to get away and hide in the sewers until Niles Cable found her. He then provided her a place to live on his team, X-Patrol, and a new identity as Panthera.
