When Hal Stark was called away, he left the power battery in the care of Kyle O'Brien, his assistant, who took on the role of Green Guardsman while Iron Lantern was out of Coast City. Others made fun of Kyle and called him "substitute" when Iron Lantern returned and resumed his position. As a result, Mandarinestro used this as a motive to successfully steal the power battery from Madame Sapphire while promising Kyle that he could have the ability to once again transform into the Green Guardsman and take the position of Iron Lantern forever.
