David"Deacon"Kay is a 51-year-old Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) veteran, having been with Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) for 10 years. He currently serves as Hondo's second-in-command and temporary team leader during Hondo's absence
At the start of the series following the dismissal of Sergeant Buck Spivey, Deacon was passed over for promotion to team leader in favor of Hondo, despite his seniority, in a blatant attempt to ease the tensions between the community and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). At first, he was upset about it but with Hondo working with him and communicating how Deacon should have been the leader and looking to him for advice, Deacon was amicable to it. Deacon was also almost being used as a pawn by upper management which he immediately said Hondo should be leader and he didn't want to be a part of the conflict
