John Shaft is a fictional character initially created by Ernest Tidyman in his 1970 novel, and a further six written between 1972-1975.
Shaft is a tough, no-nonsense private detective, a former thief and Vietnam veteran, who operates in a gritty, crime-ridden New York City. He's known for his sharp wit, confidence, and willingness to take on dangerous cases, often involving the Mafia and other criminal elements. He's a complex character, both a rebel and a protector, challenging the status quo with his actions and his very presence. He is known for his tough, streetwise persona, sharp detective skills, and iconic style, often depicted in a leather coat and sunglasses, often popularised by the iconic 1971 film. The character has been portrayed by Richard Roundtree in the original films and by Samuel L. Jackson as his son (or nephew in the 2000 film), and even had several brief comic series published by Dynamite Entertainment, when they acquired the rights to the character in May 2014.
