First appeared in Star-Spangled Comics #7 in 1942 and was created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. Jim Harper, the original Guardian, was a police officer based in Metropolis' Suicide Slum who became the Guardian when he acquired a suit and shield after being beaten up by thugs.
