The giant armadillo, colloquially tatu-canastra, tatou, ocarro or tatú carreta, is the largest living species of armadillo. It lives in South America, ranging throughout as far south as northern Argentina. This species is considered vulnerable to extinction. This armadillo has a widespread distribution along South America, and has been categorized as Vulnerable at global level as a result of its decreasing population trend due to habitat loss, hunting, and illegal animal trafficking (Anacleto et al., 2014).
