Ellery Queen is a fictional American amateur detective, a brilliant and intellectual mystery writer who assists his police inspector father in solving crimes, first appearing in The Roman Hat Mystery in 1929. He is a character created by the cousins Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee, who also shared the pen name Ellery Queen. The character evolved from an effete bookworm to a more developed, relatable figure throughout the series, which spanned over thirty novels and several short story collections. His appearances include radio dramas and several films and other TV adaptations (such as the 1970s television series where he was played by Jim Hutton), though some works feature his father, Inspector Richard Queen, or don't include Ellery Queen at all.
