Azathoth is a fictional cosmic entity from H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, known as the "Blind Idiot God" and "Daemon-Sultan," who resides at the center of the universe in "Ultimate Chaos". This being is worshipped by its cultists for its cosmic absurdity and is said to have created all existence in its chaotic dreams, which are lulled into a deep slumber by the droning music of alien servants. The universe is believed to be a dream of Azathoth, and its awakening would mean the end of all reality.
The name "Azathoth" was first mentioned in a note from 1919 by Lovecraft, and Azathoth was first formally introduced in the novella The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, which was finished in 1927, but not published until 1943, though the name was the title of an unfinished novel in 1922 by Lovecraft, which was not published until 1938.
