• castingsinmyblood The main difference between this version of the Shining and others will be that Jack's portrayal will be closer to that of the book, as well as increasing the roles of characters like Dick, Grady, Wilson, & Ullman.

  • nathanbates   @jackspinella1 I’m the same. I’ve only seen him playing put-upon or weasel-y. It would be kind of interesting for him to start out as a variation of that and then to gradually turn it around and do something more bombastic. It’s an astute suggestion.

• castingsinmyblood Another major theme in this version would be how Jack's role as the "pater familias" becomes challenged while at the Overlook. Wendy starts out the movie demure and soft-spoken, but becomes more resolved and decisive as the film goes on and the horrors of the Overlook become more apparent, a harmonious blend of Shelly Duvall and Book!Wendy. This and Danny's injury at the hands of the ghosts leads to Jack feeling displaced in his role as "the man of the house" and he comes more easily under the sway of the ghosts who indulge his darker impulses and treat him with a kind of "respect" (more like manipulation through sycophancy). This would form the basis of Jack not wanting to ever leave the hotel, since this version would portray that he's always sort of been the little guy out in the real world (a struggling writer, a doormat for his father and other people, and now, a failure as a protector to his son).

• castingsinmyblood Another element I'm going to play up is Delbert Grady. Grady in this one is going to be upgraded to major antagonist in this. Usually acting as the spokesperson for the ghosts and possibly the Hotel itself. His cold, cordial demeanor would provide the unstable Jack with a strong personality to latch onto, which is exactly what the ghosts want. Also, I would probably give some of the lines of Jack's overbearing father (who's voice is heard in the book, apparently) to him, since he would take on that role's functions.

• castingsinmyblood Another expanded character is Stuart Ullman. Ullman would be Jack's overbearing boss (the other character who gets the lines of Jack's father) he's always calling Jack at random hours with "did you do this? Did you do that? Did you do it right? Do I have to dock your pay" just putting more and more pressure on Jack. But don't worry; he gets an axe to the chest for his behavior.
