Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But it’s hard to get your come up when you’re labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral . . . for all the wrong reasons.

Description of Sonny:

One of Bri's best friends and a member of the "Unholy Trinity." Bri and Malik refer to Sonny as the "hobbit" because of how he looks, though all three of them share a love of space operas, superhero movies, and fantasy like Lord of the Rings. Sonny is gay and desperately wants to get out of Garden Heights and attend college, where he believes he'll encounter less homophobia and racism. A graffiti artist, he sprays paints rainbow fists in parks. One of these paintings attracts the attention of an Instagram user with the handle Rapid.
