Vladimir Sokov was born in the town of Bobruisk in Belarus. When he was a child his mother taught him English by reading from a stack of books on ancient myth; every book contained a version of the story of "The Red Fires of Béringovo Môre". Vladimir's father was an abusive alcoholic and in 1923 he left home at the first opportunity to join the Red Army. He quickly earned the respect of his fellows and became a decorated soldier. Eager for advancement, Vladimir seduced a high-ranking male official in the political directorate in order to get a transfer to military intelligence.
