Canada's federal government launched the Weapon X Project. Logan and Quinn of the RCAF were chosen as candidates for the project along with four other "volunteers." To survive the adamantium-making process, Logan uses his hidden metamutant healing ability. Creed continued to live, but he changed into a ruthless assassin—exactly what the project desired. The experiment physically changed Creed, and once his sanity began to fail him, he eventually went insane. Due to his acquired metamutant traits, Creed got the nickname Hyena (also known as the Cackling Hyena).
