Richard Lincoln, a cross between Nova and the Human Bomb, was working with his father on a project involving a Xandar-fueled explosion. Richard was covered with flammable chemicals when the fluid burst and was able to cause explosions with just his touch. He went into a coma as a result of his newfound stress. Garthan Colos, a member of the Dark Nova Corps, telepathically communicated with Richard while he was sleeping in the hospital. Garthan awoke Richard from his coma and gave him a modified Dark Nova battle suit to control his powers. Richard put on the suit, which allowed him to control his explosive energy, transformed into the Human Nova, and finally he joined the Freedom Defenders.
