Henry is a man who has been a compulsive smoker in the past. After overcoming lung cancer, he quit smoking and decided to start a new and better life. Eventually he also got lucky in love-he found the girl of his dreams. Everything is going fantastic between them, but one day she smells that awful, familiar odor-cigarettes-from him. He decides to persuade his girlfriend to quit smoking, but she says she knows she's not in danger and knows moderation. Their relationship is put to the test when the girl turns out to have laryngeal cancer.

The story is set in 1816, in England, in a fictional town called Berrywoods. From now on, Jane will be forced to make increasingly difficult life choices.
