David Dunn, the "unbreakable" man, sets out in pursuit of "The Beast", the superhuman personality of Kevin Wendell Crumb. Elijah Price, the "Man who breaks", in a psychiatric hospital for nineteen years after having committed attacks to reveal the powers of Dunn, awaits this confrontation from his cell. However, Doctor Ellie Staple wants to bring them together to free them from what she considers delusional and convince them that their superhuman abilities are just an illusion.

Philadelphia resident Kevin Wendell Crumb suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder. He speaks regularly with his devoted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher, who has already been able to distinguish twenty-three different personalities speaking in turn during their conversations. According to Fletcher, Kevin has suffered abuse and humiliation during his history and a 24th personality, darker and more menacing than all the others, named "the Beast", still remains buried. Dr. Fletcher emphasizes the fact that his patient forged these many different personalities in an existential need to protect himself from others. The situation is complicated when Kevin kidnaps three young girls.

David Dunn is an ordinary Philadelphia security guard. He is the sole survivor of a rail disaster. To the surprise of the authorities and the media, the man came out unscathed, without the slightest injury or trauma. Troubled by this event, Dunn enters an identity crisis. Who is he ? Why did he survive? It is in search of answers that he meets Elijah Price, a handicapped misanthropist stricken with the disease of the bones of glass.
