Justice League: Kindgom Come

In this Elseworlds story, Superman and the Justice League abandon their roles as superheroes after the rise and strong public support of a superhero named Magog, who has no qualms about killing—notably the Joker, on his way to trial for the mass murder of the Daily Planet staff, including Lois Lane. In the ensuing years, a newer generation of superpowered metahumans arise; they engage each other in destructive battles with little distinction between "heroes" and "villains." The narrator, a minister named Norman McCay, receives apocalyptic visions of the future from a dying Wesley Dodds. The Spectre appears to McCay and recruits him to help pass judgment on the approaching superhuman apocalypse.

The story begins as Bruce Wayne is still in retirement as Batman. It is only through a subconscious decision that he goes back to being Batman. Especially in the beginning of the story, it is clear that he is struggling with inner demons that are telling him to pick up where he left off as Batman. He becomes fully aware of what is going on when Alfred points out that his moustache is gone. His first act as Batman occurs as he comes to the defense of two young girls walking home at night. Carrie Kelley is one of these girls and the experience changes her young life. Seeing her opportunity to make a difference and in turn help Batman, she gets a Robin costume and joins forces with Batman as his new sidekick. Batman next battles Harvey Dent, who is newly released from the Arkham Asylum and whom the doctors believe is no threat to society. Unfortunately, the first thing he does is go straight back to his life of crime. Batman puts an end to it right away and then the secret is out: Batman is back. When the authorities catch wind of it, they do everything in their power to stop him, as they see him only as a menace. Even Superman comes out of the woodwork, at the bidding of the president, to quiet him back down. He refuses, and then goes on to squash the Joker, who is also newly released from the asylum.

When Bruce realized that the two were kidnapped and that Gotham needed help, he decided to revert to being the Caped Crusader of Gotham.

Batman: Beyond

An aging Bruce Wayne, despite suffering from health complications continues to fight crime as Batman in a new high-tech Batsuit, although he has increased difficulty in handling criminals he once subdued with finesse. In the rescue of a kidnapped heiress and the daughter of an old friend of his, Batman suffers a mild heart attack and, at the risk of losing his life to one of the kidnappers, is forced to betray a lifelong principle by threatening the criminal at gunpoint, which scares him into running towards the police. Ashamed of how far he was willing to go for his survival and the fact that he used the same kind of weapon that ended his parents' lives and drove him to become the Dark Knight in the first place, Bruce ultimately but reluctantly decides that he has grown too old for his crusade and retires from crime-fighting and shuts down the Batcave. So he met Terry McGinnis.
