A Coveted Desire
At one point in her life, Jamie Owens once contemplated the idea of leaving her dysfunctional family behind as soon as she finished high school. But those plans were changed when her mother left, and her father's health took a turn for the worse. Now young Jamie is the sole provider for her family, forgoing her college dreams to work at a local burger joint downtown, while also trying to take care of her little brother and sister, Nolan and Avery. Avery, whose birthday is coming up, requests a new, top-of-the-line doll from the "Baby Bessie" toy line as a gift. Determined to not let her little sister down, Jamie works double time at her job to save up enough money for the present but is disheartened when she arrives at the toy store to find them all sold out. But, as luck would have it, she discovers a discarded Baby Bessie doll on the street while on her way home and decides to take it for her sister. At her birthday party, Avery is overjoyed when she finds the gift, and for a moment it seems all is well in the world. That is, until the party is interrupted by a knock at the door, and a strange man who claims to be their uncle appears. He introduces himself as Tristan Miller and states that he's their mother's brother, and that he's been away for a few years. However, Jamie begins to suspect otherwise as their guest's behavior becomes increasingly concerning. Just why does he seem so interested in Avery's doll?
