Urban Warriors, known in Japan as Maniac Street, is a 2D beat-em-up developed and published by ACS. Released in 1991 for Arcades (ACS Supra System), Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PC-Engine, Sharp X68000, Amiga, MS-DOS, Game Boy and Game Gear. Urban Warriors was one of the various 2D beat-em-up games to come out during the surge of arcade beat-em-up titles that were released in the late '80s and early '90s, alongside Technos Japan’s Double Dragon series and Capcom’s Final Fight. The gameplay of Urban Warriors borrows heavily from other side-scrolling beat-em-ups from the time period, such as Double Dragon and Final Fight. The game mainly uses two buttons: one to attack and one to jump. Pressing these two buttons together unleashes the "Tornado Attack", an attack that deals damage and blows away enemies that surround the player, but costs a small portion of health as soon as it succesfully hits an enemy. The objective of the game is to progress through 6 stages, consisting of areas taking place all over Justice City, while beating up the various enemy grunts that continiously appear on-screen. Upon reaching the end of each stage, the player would then face off against a “boss” character, each with different ways to attack and methods to defeat. Each player has a life meter that goes down as the player sustains more and more attacks. Upon depletion of the life meter, the player dies and loses a life. By default, each player starts off with three lives per credit, while players can get extra lives by reaching a score of 500,000 (first bonus) and 1,000,000 (second) throughout their playthrough. Along the way, players may come across various items that they can pick up, such as food items which replenish the player's health, random items which increase score, with each item granting a value between 10 and 100,000 points, and weapons that the players can use in many ways, from melee weapons to ranged weapons, to throwing weapons. Urban Warriors is set in the fictional city of Justice City, USA (loosely based on the real-life Bronx in New York), a town infamous for its alarmingly high crime rate. Most of the crimes within the city are attributed to the gang known as the Blood Dogs, led by the ruthless mafia gangster known as "Don Belti", who rules over the underbelly of Justice City. Max Storm is a notorious name in the underground fighting circuit, known for his formidable fighting skills and undefeated record. After refusing to take a dive, and then subsequently defeating the gang's hand-picked champion in a pit fight, Don Belti, enraged by Max's actions, orders the kidnapping of Max's girlfriend, Tracy, as a form of "compensation". After the fight, Max receives a ransom letter from Don Belti himself. Furious, Max enlists the help of his friends, Lee Chen, a Chinese expat and kung-fu practitioner, and Barts Ricker, a pro wrestler. Together, these three warriors storm the streets of Justice City to take down the Blood Dogs gang and rescue Tracy from the foul clutches of Don Belti.
