Davy Jones is a main antagonist in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, first appearing in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. He is based on a character of the same from nautical folklore, whose name is used as a euphemism for a watery grave.
Once a great sailor who "ran afoul of that which vexes all men" through the sea goddess Calypso, Davy Jones was condemned for eternity as the devil of the deep, as his legends associated with the Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones' Locker. After being forsaken by Calypso, Davy Jones told the first Brethren Court how to bind Calypso into human form. Jones also carved out his own heart and locked it away in the Dead Man's Chest, keeping the key with him at all times. He became a nightmarish creature, the legendary captain of the Flying Dutchman and ruler of the ocean depths. A squid-like beast known as the Kraken brought more souls into joining Jones' crew, eventually becoming a part of the cursed ship itself.
Thirteen years after his bargain with Davy Jones, Captain Jack Sparrow searches for the Dead Man's Chest to use as leverage to satisfy his debt to Jones. Ultimately, Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company came into possession of the still-beating heart, forcing Jones and his crew to do his bidding. With the Flying Dutchman under Beckett's control, Davy Jones led Beckett's Armada in the fight against the fourth Brethren Court. It was at that point, Davy Jones reunited with Calypso, who intended to punish the Brethren, until realizing Jones' betrayal. Upon being freed, the enraged goddess created a massive maelstrom, where Jones' heart was pierced by Will Turner during the battle. Although Davy Jones died, he mysteriously reappeared years later.
