Andres Montoya is the father of Josefina Montoya; she calls him "Papá". Andres is the patrón, or head, of the rancho and the family and staff there. He is a tall man with thick eyebrows that make him look fierce, but has kind eyes. He is very conservative with his words and thoughtful. He has become very quiet and does not laugh much in recent times; Josefina believes this is due to his wife's death and not from sternness or anger. He is quiet like Josefina, but full of ideas and more open around his family. He does not have as easy a manner as his wife did, but he likes music as much as Josefina, a trait he also shares with Dolores. He is skilled at playing the violin, something he has not shown since his wife's passing. The rancho has been in his family for several generations and through his father and grandfather initially has many large flocks of sheep. When hundreds are lost in a flood he is devastated and feels that he has lost generations of work in one night. Over the course of the series, he falls in love with and later remarries to Dolores. (A man marrying his wife's sister after she died was not considered unusual at the time, as the families would already know each other well and it would keep property in a family that already had connections.)
