First appeared in Whiz Comics #2 in 1940 and was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Alan Armstrong was a wealthy aviator and athlete from Virginia. During World War II, he fought saboteurs and spies in the US as the Spy Smasher. When the war ended, he turned his attention to regular crime as the Crime Smasher.
