Gabriel Van Helsing is on a vampire case, lost in the depths of Thailand, which reminds him of a very old story from his childhood, the first time he faced death. In the early 1990s, when Gabriel was a young boy, he was in love with a girl his own age, Anna Valerious, a member of another prominent family of monster hunters. One evening, against his mother's wishes, he's taken by his mentor, Leroy Jackson, to a private party for his community, held in a disinfected warehouse, to attend a concert in which young Anna is performing. Gabriel discovers that some are capable of singing a song that comes from their very core, capable of piercing the shroud of death, but also capable of stirring up evil. This manifests itself in the form of Shay O'Connor, a melancholy old Irish vampire who hopes to use Anna's power to communicate with his long-lost loved ones, lost at the hands of some cruel ancestors of the Van Helsing family. What transpired that bloody night forged Gabriel forever...
