Rather than take Mortimer to a hospital closer to home, Beatrice elected to have him treated at Pembroke Hospital, in order to keep Mortimer's hospitalization a secret. However, Beatrice is still skeptical about the hospital's efficiency, and was put out by some of the hospital staff's behavior, Nurse Pippa Hawkins in particular. Nurse Hawkins secured a bed in a private room for a costly fee, but Beatrice paid her anyway.
