The film begins in 1954, as the French military sets up its fortified camp in the valley of Điện Biên Phủ, confident of a swift victory against the Việt Minh. The story follows Lieutenant Jacques Moreau, a disillusioned young officer haunted by the horrors of colonial warfare. On the opposing side is Lan Nguyen, a fierce Việt Minh revolutionary who has lost her entire family to French forces. When an intense artillery bombardment decimates Jacques’ unit, he and a small group of soldiers are sent into the dense jungle to establish a communication line. They stumble into an ambush led by Lan’s squad, and both sides suffer heavy casualties. Only Jacques and Lan survive, forced to navigate the hostile terrain together. As they trek deeper into the jungle, reality begins to warp: soldiers’ corpses seem to whisper, the jungle pulses with an unnatural energy, and time itself appears to unravel. The jungle becomes a hallucinatory no-man’s-land where Jacques and Lan’s trauma manifests in terrifying ways. Jacques sees the ghosts of his fallen comrades, accusing him of complicity in the horrors of war, while Lan is haunted by visions of her dead family, begging her to avenge them. As the two enemies are forced to rely on each other for survival, their hatred turns into an uneasy alliance. They begin to question the purpose of the war, their roles in it, and whether their fight for survival is even real—or if they’ve already died and are trapped in a purgatory of their own making.
