Erik and Xavier D r. Henry Philip "Hank" McCoy has thought about getting mutants in college so they go out there and get kids who are different from people. Many mutants learn how to control their powers. However, not everyone accepts mutants. The general public fear the mutants and the Government feel threatened by their power. In response, the Government enlist the help of scientist Bolivar Trask who plans to use his Sentinel program to identify and capture mutants for research purposes.
