Helena had several suitors, who included many of Greece's greatest heroes, and her adopted father, Tindar, hesitated to make a decision in favor of one of them for fear of enraging the others. Finally one of the suitors, Odysseus (whose Latin name was Ulysses), king of Ithaca, resolved the impasse by proposing that all suitors swear to protect Helena and the husband she chose, whatever it was. Helena then married Menelaus, who became king of Sparta.
