The Substance: Origins is set two decades before the events of The Substance. We follow Dr. Evelyn Winters, a brilliant but obsessive biochemist working at GenCore Laboratories, a secretive research firm that’s on the verge of a major discovery in cognitive enhancement. Evelyn is part of an elite team tasked with developing a new compound designed to boost intelligence, intuition, and emotional regulation. However, during the experiment's early phases, the team encounters unintended, nightmarish side effects—hallucinations, aggressive behavior, and increasing paranoia. As Evelyn dives deeper into the testing process, she notices that the Substance—an amber-hued serum—seems to have a mind of its own, driving users to become more possessive and manipulative. One night, Evelyn decides to test it on herself, and while her cognitive abilities initially skyrocket, her sense of identity fractures. She begins to lose control, as the Substance creates an alternate version of herself, embodying all her darkest thoughts and repressed desires.
