In Central City in 1940, Denny Colt, a young police man, was fighting the evil Dr. Cobra, then doused with a liquid which put him into a deep coma. Believed dead, Denny was buried at Wildwood Cemetery, but awoke from his grave, twenty four hours later. He established his secret crime-fighting base under his own tombstone, and, using his new-found anonymity, Denny became a vigilante, one that fights crime and protects the people of Central City, one known as "The Spirit".
