Twenty years later, Audrey and Vanessa are both private investigators who work for an unscrupulous boss named Vincent Michaels. Audrey witnesses a red fog, and senses an unknown presence within it; she and Vanessa scarcely recognize the spiritual form, but they deny it, knowing that it is impossible. The spirit discloses several prophecies of the two: they are destined to find the truth about their mother, they will both become the next bosses in their workplace as a means to ruin Michaels and his career, and they are going to investigate their mother's disappearance. They initially find this delusional, but after they discover that they are in Bismarck's interstate, and that they unintentionally left the fog to get there, they realize that they have no choice but to accept their fates. The sisters find multiple crashed cars and see the skeletons of each victim; They find their mother's car, but her body is nowhere to be found, indicating that she may be alive.

The sisters come to terms with their prophecies about their own future, and after they are denied permission to investigate their personal case, they take matters into their own hands and do it themselves. Martin Vance, a childhood friend to the sisters, agrees to help them after he gives them a letter from their mother. The letter says "Never forget that you two girls are the light of my life, now and always. Love Mama". Audrey and Vanessa's belief that their mother may still be alive increases despite other possibilities, and they dig deeper into the investigation.

Many weeks later, the spirit has vanished. The sisters visit their dying father, who has been diagnosed with a typhus fever. After they tell him that they are investigating their mother's disappearance, he encourages them to keep going, having deduced that they are so close. He then dies two days later, and he is buried in their traditional cemetery. Audrey contemplates completing her investigation alone, but Vanessa, unwilling to live without her sister, refuses to let her go alone, and reassures her that she deserves help.

To ensure the investigation is not interrupted, Martin aids the sisters in getting Michaels fired and arrested by the police, having deduced that he is a crime associate; however, the sisters let Martin run the place until they return to claim the office. In their final investigation of their case, they split up to find the evidence. The red fog approaches, but the spirit is not there; the fog suddenly gives Audrey a vision of what really happened. Deducing that they are back in the Bismarck interstate, the sisters decide to search their mother's car once again. Audrey spots the driver's window being smashed, and when she looks down from it, she locates a decomposed skeleton. Remembering that she and Vanessa vaguely recognized the form of that spirit in the fog, and recalling the spirit saying that they love the two, Audrey finally realizes that their mother did not survive her own disappearance, and has been the spirit who prophesied her and Vanessa. The sisters tearfully acknowledge the fact that their mother was murdered by the same assailant that her spirit mentioned, and they correspond with her one more time. They assure her that they will see her again, and she happily passes on.

They tell Martin about their discovery, and he comforts them after he hears the part where their mother has been dead the entire time. The sisters then look outside their window and beyond the horizon of Bismarck as the end credits roll.
