In 17th-century Madrid, the pious Capuchin monk Ambrosio is the city's spiritual rock—adored by the masses for his sermons on virtue. But when he encounters the enigmatic Matilda (disguised as a novice), his repressed passions ignite. Egged on by lust, ambition, and a seductive demon named Lucifer in the guise of a fallen angel, Ambrosio spirals into corruption: seductions, sorcery, and unspeakable crimes against the innocent, including the innocent Antonia (whom he fixates on incestuously). Haunting visions, graveyard rituals, and the vengeful ghost of a betrayed woman (Elvira) close in, dragging him toward infernal damnation.
