In the barren deserts of the Southwest, Samuel “Sam” Mercer is a former gunslinger in his eighties, spending his days living a quiet, almost forgotten life in the remote border town of Dunston, where the old ways have long faded, and few remember his storied past. When a Mexican immigrant family—Rosa and Diego Martinez and their young son Emilio—arrive in town looking to start a farm, they quickly fall victim to ruthless land baron Clayton Burroughs and his men, who threaten to push them off the land they’ve bought, claiming it rightfully belongs to Burroughs. With no one else to turn to, Rosa and Diego reluctantly seek help from Sam, who is known to the townsfolk as a bitter old recluse. At first resistant, Sam soon realizes that helping the family might be his final chance to right old wrongs and leave behind a legacy of kindness instead of violence. As Sam dusts off his skills and weapon, he quickly learns he’s not the man he used to be. His eyesight is failing, his hand is unsteady, and his reflexes are a fraction of what they once were. But he’s fueled by a purpose he hasn’t felt in years. Together with Rosa and Diego, Sam devises a plan to protect their land from Burroughs and his corrupt cronies, each small victory strengthening their fragile alliance. When Burroughs realizes the old gunslinger is a serious threat, he brings in a younger, deadlier gunslinger, Eli “The Kid” Walker, who also has a haunting connection to Sam’s past.
