Set against the gritty backdrop of Gotham City, The Joker follows Gwyn Flisk, a disfigured and emotionally scarred man whose haunting smile, the result of a traumatic childhood incident, has made him a target of cruelty. One day, Gwyn is discovered by Victor Hargrave, a vaudeville producer who sees potential in Gwyn’s unique appearance. As Gwyn becomes Gotham’s most sought-after performer, he begins to question the cost of his success. Hargrave pressures Gwyn into more degrading roles, urging him to lampoon Gotham’s political elite in his acts, which earns the ire of powerful figures. When Gwyn attempts to leave the theater, Hargrave sabotages him by blacklisting him in Gotham’s entertainment circles. At the masquerade, Gwyn stages a one-man performance mocking Gotham’s elite, using their own masked personas to expose their hypocrisy and corruption. The act starts as a satirical comedy but soon devolves into a dark, scathing critique. When Hargrave confronts Gwyn mid-performance, Gwyn, in a fit of rage, unmasks himself in front of the audience, revealing his disfigurement and mocking their shock with chilling laughter. The crowd turns against him, but Gwyn has already orchestrated a fiery finale: an elaborate act where the ballroom is rigged with pyrotechnics and illusions, blurring the line between theater and destruction. The masquerade descends into chaos as Gwyn declares, “If life’s a joke, I’ll be its punchline.”
