The story opens with Count Nefaria leading an authoritarian regime in a civil war, which turns against him after a Stark Industries weapon deal, forcing him to send his daughter, Giulietta, to New York. In the present, this daughter, now the masked villain Madame Masque, is a high-ranking member of the Maggia crime family and a subordinate of Monica Rappaccini's A.I.M. Tony Stark, having lost control of Stark Industries to Obadiah Stane, is forced to re-engage with his past when stolen Stark weapons fall into A.I.M.'s hands. Nick Fury convinces a reluctant Tony to suit up as Iron Man to stop the thefts, leading to an initial confrontation where he's overwhelmed by Masque. Tony and Stane then orchestrate a massive arms show to bait A.I.M., but the plan goes sideways, forcing Tony to don his unfinished Mark III armor. He flies into the chaos, saving civilians and engaging in a dramatic battle with Madame Masque, who reveals her scarred face and blames him for her family's ruin. After a fierce fight, Masque escapes by using a massive weapon as a distraction, which Iron Man and War Machine must stop together. In a twist, Silvermane betrays and kills Monica Rappaccini, leaving Madame Masque as the new leader of A.I.M. The first post-credit scene shows Tony as a celebrated hero while Fury begins assembling the Avengers initiative. The final scene sets up a future criminal empire, with Kingpin leading a meeting of top villains, including Madame Masque and Silvermane.
