When winter comes, a hero will rise.
The movie tells the story of a village in a beautiful forest called Reddsylvania (a pun on Pennsylvania). The village is filled with kind, fun-loving, and virtuous red squirrels, led by their village leader, the MinSquirrel. When Myron is first born, he notices he has a black tail and is ostracized by his siblings. Soon, Myron is known as a "misfit" and is ignored by grownups and ridiculed by kids. Only his parents care about him and tell him to ignore everyone else, but Myron just can't seem to get over their insults. Just a few days before winter, the MinSquirrel realizes that everyone in the village has forgotten to store acorns (since he forgot to mark the storage week on all their calendars). Hopefully, Myron promises to go on an adventure to find the mythical All-Bearing Tree, a tree that bears fruit for eternity. With help from a runaway circus monkey from Africa named Bumba, Myron sets out on a journey to save his village and learns an important lesson in perspective of different people's minds.
