Set in 1957, Father Jonathan Wells, a skeptical young priest battling a crisis of faith, is sent to investigate strange occurrences at the Monastery of St. Cyprian, a crumbling structure isolated deep in the Carpathian Mountains. Reports from local villagers speak of monks disappearing, horrific sounds echoing from the monastery at night, and livestock found mutilated with symbols carved into their flesh. Jonathan is accompanied by Dr. Elaine Morgan, a forensic anthropologist who specializes in religious artifacts, and Lucas Finch, a Vatican archivist with a dangerous obsession with the occult. Upon arriving, they find the monastery almost entirely abandoned, save for three remaining monks who appear gaunt, deranged, and riddled with self-inflicted wounds. The monks warn the group to leave, claiming the monastery has been cursed by an ancient, nameless entity that predates Christianity. The group realizes the monks had been performing dark rituals, believing they were speaking directly to God. Instead, they summoned an unspeakable entity—a malevolent, godlike being that drives all who encounter it into violent insanity.
