Set five years after City of Heavenly Fire, the trilogy follows Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs and her parabatai Julian Blackthorn at the Los Angeles Institute. The plot kicks off when Emma investigates a series of occult murders she believes are linked to her parents' deaths, leading the group into a dangerous bargain with the Faerie Courts to retrieve Julian's kidnapped brother, Mark. As they uncover a necromantic conspiracy involving the High Warlock of Los Angeles and the resurrection of an ancestor, they must hide their forbidden romantic feelings; Shadowhunter law strictly prohibits parabatai from falling in love, under threat of a legendary curse.
