The film begins with Cinaedeus leading Rome's armies to victory in a brutal campaign against barbarian invaders. His triumph is celebrated, but Rome is fractured, teetering between its pagan traditions and the rise of Christianity. Cinaedeus, desperate to preserve the old ways, is visited by a mysterious oracle who claims that the gods have chosen him as their champion. She presents him with an unholy fire, the "Flame of Eternity," which grants immense power at the cost of his humanity. As Cinaedeus grows stronger, his mind begins to unravel. The fire burns inside him, consuming his soul and spreading chaos wherever he goes. His victories become massacres, and his former allies turn against him as they fear the madness that drives him. At the same time, the Christian sects see Cinaedeus as a demon sent to test their faith, rallying against him as both a man and a symbol of Rome's dying paganism. Haunted by visions of the gods mocking him, Cinaedeus realizes that the flame is a trap—a punishment for his hubris and refusal to accept Rome’s inevitable change. In a climactic final battle, he faces his former protégé, a young Christian convert named Lucius, who seeks to extinguish the flame and end Cinaedeus' torment.
