Seduced by the dream of the Giant's riches, Jack turns to the Mystic to get the chance to rob the monster's floating palace, willing to pay the price of the life of his own mother. Jack, both angry at the world and driven mad by greed, is harrowed and terrified when the Maiden forces him to partake in her quest to escape the Giant.
