After Gwen's death, Peter has been grieving over her. When an alien-like substance attaches to him, he sees this as an advantage to vent out his rage on criminals, but when he sees what it is doing to him he takes it off. The symbiote bonds to another person, creating Spider-Man's biggest enemy yet.
