accaffreyPlot: Three days into Charlie's journey, he exits the woods surrounding his town and enters the colorful but dimly lit Tragmiere Swamp. Not wanting to sleep there, he tries to push through so that he can get to a safer resting environment. But the swamp is long and treacherous, and at about five-thirty a.m. he collapses into the water unconscious, and three alligators begin to inch towards him, ready for their next meal. Suddenly, just when it looks like Charlie won't make it out, an anthropomorphic reptilian-amphibian-fish creature fights off the gators, and drags Charlie into a beautiful cave dwelling. He grabs a pile of glowing neon goo and shoves it down the baker's throat. He wakes up gasping, amazed at the creature and how he can now talk underwater without losing oxygen, a result of the goo. Him and the creature (whose name is Fiskellio and is a swamp mutant) develop a sort of communication, and Fiskellio introduces Charlie to his pregnant mate, Xevilleye. At that time, some fishermen come looking through the swamp with shotguns, harpoons, and large fishing supplies. Fiskellio is able to explain to Charlie that his kind is being hunted for their impenetrable scales. Together, he and Charlie work together to keep the fishermen away and save his species. It gratitude, Fiskellio agrees to join Charlie on his mission, giving his mate one last goodbye before they trek off to a dark, dark town...
