A retired Air Force Pilot and Policeman Gene was a writer who dreamed of a new type of series, a 'wagon train to the stars'. He had been impressed by Leonard's performance in Roddenberry's show "The Lieutenant" and considered him among his first choices for the role of Spock, the character that would change Leonard's life forever. Despite his marriage, Gene was opinionated and could be misogynist. He fired Leonard's friend, Grace Lee Whitney, who played Yeoman Rand, after 6 episodes because she wasn't submissive enough. It was Leonard who brought Grace back into the Star Trek family for the first movie and saved her from a life of desperation.
