Someone who does not speak onscreen because they cannot speak at all. They are intelligent; they do show signs of sapience — at least to us, the viewers, if not to the other characters. They may be able to vocalise on-screen, but it will not be in a known language — just the occasional sigh, gasp, or other such non-speech sounds — and none of the other characters will be able to interpret what they say. They will be able to gesture, but this may or may not convey any meaning to the other characters; they may play charades with them to figure out what they have to say. In extremes, may lapse into Talking with Signs — but only we the viewers get to see the signs.
