Because they look like that, all kinds of ugly stuff happens, either to them or to the ones they love, up to and including being kissed by princes. As to what causes this condition, there can be a range of causes including drinking potions, eating dodgy food, pricking your finger on sewing equipment, triggering some kind of curse and so forth.
