The Hero is fighting The Dragon, or the Big Bad, and finds out they're hopelessly outmatched. The villain decides to go ahead and kill them off, and it's over. The hero is dead. ...or are they? Perhaps they were Only Mostly Dead or Death Is Cheap. Maybe The Medic was able to bring them back. Either way, they start to fight again and reveal that thanks to their defeat, they Took a Level in Badass and may have access to powers they never had before.
