There are three things that can be referred to as an Audience Surrogate: The viewpoint character; See Point of View. A character who asks questions the audience would ask and says things the audience would say. A character who the audience (or the children in the audience) doesn't just sympathize with, but are supposed to actively see themselves as — by desire, by default, or by author inference.
