Maria was devastated when he brother Shadow chose to buy time for her and her cousin Julien to escape THE ARK when her other cousin Colin tried to have her assassinated. She holds out hope that Shadow survived and she soon bonds with Sonic when he reminds her of her brother. She promises to help the Mobians stop The Overlanders if they promise that they’ll help her find Shadow.
